What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. I like to think of EMDR as a way to process traumatic or adverse memories and come to a resolution by reprocessing. Try thinking of your brain as having multiple filing cabinets. Every night during your REM (rapid eye movement) sleep cycle your brain organizes these memories into filing cabinets. Some of these memories are neatly stored in the filing cabinets which cause you to feel relaxed and at ease when thinking about them. Other memories are jammed in the filing cabinets and left on the floor. This causes you to feel distressed, anxious, and uncomfortable when thinking of the memories or triggers associated with the memory. What EMDR does is organize through these disheveled memories so that you feel at ease when recalling the memory and no longer get triggered.
